Don Gurney, a visionary architect, deeply respects the traditions of architecture while infusing a contemporary design perspective into his work. His approach is all about creating spaces that achieve harmony, utilizing natural materials that age gracefully. In 1998, Don founded Openspace Architecture after a decade working as a Project Architect and Planner on significant waterfront developments in Vancouver. He combines his extensive planning knowledge with a humanistic approach, emphasizing site context and the enhancement of the building experience. Don holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Carleton University in Ontario, Canada is a member of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

ERIC PETTIT
SENIOR ASSOCIATE

Eric Pettit, a seasoned building technologist and production team leader, directs projects from design through contract administration. With over 30 years of experience, he excels in contract documentation, utilizing a wealth of construction knowledge and cost management expertise. Actively improving the 3D digital modeling process, Eric enhances constructibility and facilitates seamless multi-discipline integration. His extensive background encompasses notable contributions to airport and Skytrain infrastructure developments, along with the successful completion of over 27 resort homes in Whistler, BC. Eric is a graduate of Ryerson University in Ontario, Canada holds a Bachelor of Architectural Technology.

ELIZABETH GRUCHALA
ASSOCIATE - ARCHITECT AIBC

Elizabeth Gruchala specializes in crafting custom homes and has an extensive global background in hotels, resorts, and institutional buildings. Her passion lies in collaborating closely with clients to create elegant designs that reflect their individual preferences, aiming to evoke a sense of warmth and sophistication in every project. By prioritizing open communication and collaboration, she cultivates enduring relationships with clients and builders. Elizabeth holds a Master of Architecture and a Bachelor of Architectural Studies degree from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, and is a member of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia.

INTERN ARCHITECT AIBC

With a Diploma in Building Technology from BCIT and a Master of Architecture from the University of Western Australia, John brings a blend of design insight and technical precision to every project. Over his 15+ years in the construction industry, he’s developed a knack for balancing bold ideas with real-world applications.

John finds the most satisfaction in transforming concepts into tangible structures, knowing his technical skills bring each architectural vision one step closer to reality.

ERIK GRANANDER
ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST

With over a decade of experience at Openspace and a background in Architectural and Building Technology from BCIT, Erik combines technical expertise with hands-on construction knowledge to ensure each project is built on a strong foundation of teamwork and precision. Known for his collaborative spirit, he develops solid relationships with consultants and trades to form a balanced, problem-solving team. Erik’s approach keeps projects running smoothly and efficiently, tackling any challenges that arise with a steady, solutions-oriented focus.

AGUSTINA GARCIA DEL RIO
ARCHITECT (ARGENTINA) - INTERIOR DESIGNER

Agustina holds a Master's and Bachelor's degree in Architecture, as well as a Master's in Teaching Specialization in Architecture and Design from the University of Buenos Aires. With over a decade of experience in architecture, interiors, furniture design, photography, and creative direction, her work is driven by care, thoughtfulness, and purpose. In 2020, she relocated to Copenhagen and later to Vancouver, where she joined the Openspace team and the faculty at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, creating meaningful spaces and interactions.

Fernanda holds a Bachelor of Architectural and Building Technology from BCIT and works closely with Senior Architects across all phases of the design process, from schematic concepts to working drawings. Inspired by the rich culture and history of her hometown, Mexico City, she is passionate about creating beautiful and unique spaces—whether residential, commercial, or public—that reflect her love for design. Fernanda thrives on solving challenges and focusing on the details to bring each project to life.

Now based in Vancouver, he is excited to bring his European design sensibility to the Openspace team. Passionate about collaboration, Jesse finds the most rewarding part of his work in crafting meaningful, tailored experiences with clients and colleagues.

Ray holds diplomas in Architectural Sciences & Technology from RRC Polytech and Graphic Design from the University of Manitoba. He specializes in illustration, model building, 3D modeling, rendering, and creating presentation materials. With a keen eye for detail and a passion for design, Ray brings both creativity and technical precision to every project, from concept to final presentation. His work enhances designs and effectively communicates ideas to clients and stakeholders.

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

Doreen oversees the day-to-day financial operations at Openspace, she works closely with senior management to manage budgets, contracts, and invoicing, aligning financial functions with company goals. Her dedication to precision and collaboration plays a key role in supporting OSA’s growth and success.
